Identity is an important part of our lives; it’s not necessarily who you truly are, but it’s what you want people to think of you or the way you want to express yourself. There are different kinds of identities such as cultural identity, gender identity, and national identity and off course online identity.

            Cultural is an important part of one’s identity, its affect the way you live, the way you behave. Culture identity is not something a certain individual have; it’s more of the identity of a certain group. Our culture is our lifestyle, our belief; people with the same culture have a common ground.     

            Gender also makes up an important part of your identity; certain things are expected from certain sex. Normally boys are expected to be spoil, athletic, and have bad hygiene; girls on the other hand are expect to be less active then boys and are expected to be lady like. Anyone who doesn’t live up to these expectations will be picked on by others, for example if you are not a “manly” man, you’ll be accused of being gay, if you are a girl and act like a boy, people will call you tom boy. These gender identities are given to people when they are born, it doesn’t matter if you like it or not, you will be stuck with these identities for the rest of your life. In the old days people even discriminate based on gender, they don’t even consider women as people. Nowadays we don’t discriminate based on gender but we still have countless stereotypes about different sex.

            Another identity is the national identity, which the identity that is given to you based on the place you were born in. it’s similar to cultural identity but they are not the same, for example two country may share similar cultural and lifestyle, but they are two completely different country and therefore they will have different national identity.

            The last identity is online identity, it’s an online social identity that Internet users establish in online communities and websites, it has taken the new generation by storm, and almost every teenager in the country has an online identity. You can create a whole new identity online, you can create a completely fake identity or express the real you, you can do whatever you want with this identity and do not need to worry about what other people think of you. Most people tend to have 2 completely different identities, one is a fake online identity and another is the identity you have in real life, but more often then not the online identity tend to express the real self of that person. That is because online you are not restricted by anyone, you can do whatever you want and there is nothing anyone can do to you because they are far away from you and sometime they don’t even know your true name. But it’s a completely different story in real life. In real life you have to worry about what other people think of you, you make your decision based your peer, whether it will make you popular or not, you don’t make your decision based on what you really want. The online communities also help you to express yourself better, there are many different chat groups, and people from over the world can join that group and talk about the things they are interest in.

           Almost every teenager in the country use internet, the two most popular social network sites are myspace and facebook, around 100 million myspace accounts have been created and thousand of people are registering for new account everyday. Facebook have only launched for around 4 years, yet it already has over100 million users. People can join groups with others and talk about things they are interested in, they can write blog about the interesting things that happened to them recently for other people to read, they can upload video, and they can interact with each other by send photos. When one or some of his friend wrote positive comment on things that he have posted, he’ll be encouraged to post some more. However some people may post negative comment about your blog and it might cause a verbal war or sometime it can cause serious fight in real life. Social network give you the power to post those comments, in real life you might never say these things because you are afraid you might get into a fight with your friend, but online you can say all kind of horrible things and there is nothing anyone can do to you. Social network work brings out the real you, whether it’s your good side or your bad side.

            Social networking has huge impact on our social life, especially on the life of teenager. A lot of teenager’s social lives are based on those websites, everyday they go on the internet and socialize with their friends online, some people are so addicted to internet they’d rather stay home the whole day instead of going outside. Internet is like a whole new playground for teenagers but with less adult supervision as the parents either don’t have the password to their kid’s account or don’t know anything about social networking at all. Internet also created a new route for sexual predator as many people post their real name, real address and real pictures about them self. Predators can also pretend to be someone else and get close to the teenager they are interested in. cyber bullies also emerged from the online community. Before the internet, people can only get bullied in school, after the school is over you can still go home and enjoy the rest of your day, but with internet, you can get bullied at home as well, even though they can’t hurt you physically, they can still hurt you mentally with words. An example would be Ryan in the documentary, he was bullied at home and at school, so he finally decided to kill himself.

             There are no limits to the future of social networking. People already do most of things online, they bank online, they talk in forum online, they pay their bills online, and they socialize online. I wouldn’t be surprised if we do almost everything online. I personally don’t think this is the right direction we are heading towards, in the future internet will grow so will the problem we have with internet today. Sure we can use internet to make our lives easier, but don’t use internet as the only way to socialize, go out once in a while. Some people get too attached to social networks, they check back in every 2-3 minute just to see if anyone left any comment on his blog, it’s an addiction, just like smoking.

            Identity is something we all have, your identity is mostly based on your decision, it’s your choice whether to study hard and be a “nerd” or goof around and be “cool”. I personally don’t think people should envy “cool” people and discriminate “uncool” people, we often judge people without getting to know them. Social networking allows us to express our self better and get to know each other better. However it also has its downside, it’s addictive and it’s actually quite dangerous. I think we shouldn’t take sites like face book too serous and get to know a person before you judge them.

For this project i want to hear you guy’s view on the documentary, I want to know what you guys think about the documentary and the people that are mentioned. I personally think web is becoming an important part of teenage life, even though i’ve never used websites like facebook, my space but i check news and watch video online almost everyday, i am also a big fan of online games. I am also hoping to hear what the class think about web 2.0, identity and the future of web, It will help me on my research and essay.
